He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
A picture I remember well from the time. Never until now noticed the little snub and cartridges at his feet...like the ones the aircrews carried.

Is that the pound cake in a can behind him? One thing that was edible in C-rats.

Pound cake came in a shorter can. As said before it could be "Beanie Weenies" or some other scrumptious delicacy or even a can of fruit.

Looks like one of B-2 units:
Beans and Wieners
Spaghetti and Meatballs*
Beefsteak, Potatoes and Gravy
Ham and Lima Beans*
Meatballs and Beans

We had another name for "Ham and Lima Beans" that I won't say in mixed company.
That was the first thing I thought of...strange that.
Here's a link the guys for all that never tried them... https://medium.com/war-is-boring/bea...s-e58f1ca8943c

Going off thread a bit, your link woke dormant memories, not that I ever ate C rations but the comments in the article could just have easily referred to Britishrations of the 70s and 80s. Just to prove how sad I am, I still have around 6 or so of the P38 can openers. Wouldn't use anything else to open a can.
I have one on the workbench right now. Ours was much bigger and our guys took the P38 when available for their dogtag chain. Yes, we had some stuff that was barely edible...ham and egg...something in mushroom gravy...creme of chalk soup... A couple.
What, have we drifted?
