Lathe

Powered up my new to me Standard-Modern 1340 lathe for the first time today. Once I figure out how to wire up the reversing switch, I'll be able to set it up in its permanent spot. Need some more tooling - a four jaw chuck in particular - but then will be ready to do barrel work again. Lathe is 13" swing, 40" centres, 1 1/2" spindle bore, so it will be able to handle most any barrel smaller than a .50. Haven't had access to a barrel sized lathe for a year and a half.
Could have bought a number of interesting rifles for what it cost.....

I have a four jaw chuck from a 1960's Leblond, 17"swing 48" centers. It measures 12" in diameter and weighs quite a bit. If your interested give me a shout, I'll give it to you for shipping costs-SDH

Thanks for the offer, I do appreciate it - a 4 jaw is on the way. Made a little continuity tester, determined the switching pattern, and the carriage mounted switch actuator is now giving foreward and reverse.

Very cool, mine is working fine, but, the taper slide in the back gets sticky-SDH

Taper attachments are useful, better than offsetting the tailstock. Mine came with the taper attachment, and a micrometer carriage stop. I'd ordered a plain jane D1-4 mount 4 jaw, must have been out of stock, they substituted a scroll 4 jaw, with jaws independently adjustable in addition to the scroll. I've never used a scroll 4 jaw before. Expected a Chinese chuck, this one is made in Jugoslavia (Serbia?).

I'm taking the hole taper unit to work and rebuild it. My lathe is almost as old as I am so I figure it may be due for a little TLC. I'm also thinking about a new motor, high HP DC. I can control the speeds a little better using a SCR/DC set-up. After that I'm going to rework the mill-SDH

My wife says my tools should be for "show only" and I shouldn't really touch anything with them, which gives you some idea of my competency level with machinery ...

Playing with tools isn't just for fun, its a living! Been gun smithing since 1983, but, didn't get a full machine shop until 1992. When I get bored, I make fixtures, my wife says I'm compulsive, I think shes just lazy and trying to cover for it-SDH

Same goes here guy's if you come south of the border, I'd love to get a visit. I live in Stanhope, NJ right on rt 183. Its a nice little town within about an hours drive of about 35 gunshows a year (hint) -SDH
