When did they start stamping the Underwood cartouche at the back of the stock?

    Duggaboy,
Like Bill just stated, Never have I seen a boxed GHD over UEF with the CC in it stamped that far back. Not that it couldn't be one of a kind....but I doubt the use of this stamp on this early of a stock. The stamp is bogus showing no sign of wear or grime in the stamped lines and letters.
Here's the link to the one on auction,
M1 Carbine Underwood stock HIGHWOOD - eBay (item 300313716100 end time May-15-09 10:57:43 PDT)
A GHD over UEF with the CC all in the box should look more like this,

But on a stock this early I'd atleast expect to see the seperate boxed UEF over GHD with the CC 'outside' to the right of it,

Along with a circled P proof on the bottom of the grip,

The stock has been refinished (poorly) with no attention to the crack inside to the inner left side of the recoil plate.
Looks as though it was painted with a 'Gel Type Stain' used to help hide the sanding and give the wood grain a more uniform finish. If you look closely you can see where the stain overlaps the top of the stock into the inside. No oil was applied to the inside of it. Even the slingwell shows they cut corners and didn't fully apply the top coat. Basically a 'Production Re-finish Job' with a humped Cartouche.
It's a Underwood stock.... worth $50-$75 for a shooter. But not a original that will add value to one's beloved early Underwood.

Till I saw who had the stock for sale I could not believe someone would steam, strip, sand and then stain with the wrong kind of stain a highwood stock. But seeing who is selling it also made sense as to who put the acceptence stamp on the stock and I don't think it was Underwood.

I've wondered that too Phil. He's notorious for his internet scams, but does he sell locally in CA.

Ebay is so messed up now with it's feedback ratings that George shows a 100% positive score now. There is a site (Toolhaus.org) that could gather negative ebay transactions accurately before, but ebay found a way to block them. I just checked George's feedback on the toolhaus site and it only shows very old negatives and comments. What a pity. All we can do now is police these auctions and at least let other concerned collectors know as Charlie (painter777) just did.
New carbine owners will buy George's humps more than ever.

Whatever it's worth, here's what's left of George's feedback. The negative feedback used to go on for pages and pages and he left horrible rebuttals that seldom made any sense.

George will not sell from his store front. He only sells at shows and over the net. I already went that route back before I had a lick of sense!
