New one and a stock question....

Found this one saturday at a show. Traded for it. The SN and barrel date match according to my data. It looks to me someone tried to make a national match clone at some point. I took the chance and brought it home. Shot it with some loads I had on my bench. Nothing special. Posted a group pic. Looks like some tinkering is in it's future. The stock question is the "s" in the mag cutout? Never seen this marking before. I know keystone stocks have a "k" there, but not an s. Anybody got this one? Also if anyone has a correct rear sight and front sight insert they would be willing to part with, please let me know. Any comments on this one? Thanks in advance, Jason.

Springfield stock. Is it a Mk1 with the cut-out in the left wall?

Nope. It is a C Stock. Mark I stocks were S style. No cut out in mine.

The Type C stock was made at Springfield Armory. It is a replacement. I agree that someone probably tried to make a "match" rifle out of it. Too bad - the finish looks original to me.

Also, Mark I's are stamped "Mark I" on the receiver ring; not "Model 1903".

I agree. I think the finish is correct. Oh well. I have $450 in it. I think it is worth that as a shooter. It's still a piece of history to me. Thanks Rick for answering my stock question. I'll load up a couple of different combinations for it and see what it will do. My 13 yr old likes it and will give him lots of practice using peep sights.

The rifle you bought is a DCM sales rifle from 1929.
The serial number is in a group of receivers pulled from regular "Mark 1"
production for a "special purpose" use at Springfield .

So...could the C stock be correct? There were no regular P markings on it. Nothing. It doesnt look to be sanded to h&!! and back to refinish it like lots I have seen.

Jason, Beautiful rifle. It seems to me it would be worth more than $450. I have an S marked in cutout scant 1903 stock with an SAA rebuild stamp. (It has no cut for the 03a3 handguard ring) Salt Flat
