    pencilled numbers on butt

    Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and find the members here very helpful and informative. I recently purchased an 1899 carbine with some pencilled numbers on the butt, under the butt plate. Has anyone seen this before, or is it meaningless? This carbine was a Ft Leavenworth modified carbine with the sling swivel modification.

I attempted to upload some pics but was unsuccessful. I need to figure out the system here.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!

    David

Good pictures! I wish I could get my digital camera to behave so well on close-up shots.

The meaning of those numbers is lost to history. They certainly weren't applied during manufacture. Neat piece of history though - who knows???

Did it have the rifle or carbine sight?

Attached are pics of the front and rear sights and a picture of the carbine.

Could be an officer's serial number. Mine started "052*****" for a total of
eight digits. But I got commisioned in 1966. The sequence "051" on the butt
would seem more recent than when the Krags were in military use.
    Just an observarion.
