Info needed on WRA WWII era model 70

A friend has this in his collection and may be lookig to sell. Has "Winchester Model 70 .30 Gov't 05" (maybe an OS instead of 05 ???). SN# 85161 puts it at 1941. Has a Griffin & Howe scope mount with a Lyman Alaskan scope
sn# 38534. Could this be a WWII sniper variant?
    Thanks
    Ray

According to my reference, the serial number puts it at 1948. Does it have a metal or composite buttplate? Does the receiver have a clip slot?

"The Complete Book of US Sniping" by Peter Senich shows a photo of Winchester Model 70, SN #47262, made in 1941, with a commercial Unertl scope. Acccording to Mr Senich, it was evaluated but not adopted by the military during WWII, but personal rifles saw some use.

Lacking provenance, I would assume that your friend has a typical post-war hunting rifle.

That should be "Winchester Model 70 .30 Gov't 06." That's how my Model 70 made in 1939 is stamped. Mine also had the Griffen and Howe with the Lyman Alaskan, but now wears a newer scope (I kept the old scope and mount.) Mine also has a Redfield peep sight snuggled under the rear scope base.

    +1

    What Vern said.

May take a good glass to check, but I really think this is 06, not 05.

With a few exceptions, value of those rifles depends almost entirely on condition. In .30-'06, the most common caliber (80% of production), an average condition rifle will run around $700 retail.
