Restoration Project of a Lifetime (so far), Pt.2.

Well, I spent much of yesterday continuing from where I left off on the 1916 EFD Mk3* aldis H&H SMLE sniper. The rear base was already on & yesterday it was a case of clean off the old solder & any corrosion from the inner faces of the front base; clean off the blue from the circumference of the barrel where the front base was destined to sit, then notch the barrel a tad so as to clear the two screws that clamp each half together. Once that was done, tin both the barrel & each half of the front base. Prior to doing that I had had a dry run of assembling everything to ensure it all fitted together, the scope locked up etc etc. I suspect I also had a measure of luck as unusually for me everything went together just as planned & once I had finished the soldering, allowed it to cool down, & then once again offered up the scope, it fitted straight away, including the lock up of the roll over catch. Mind you, I wonder what the chances are of getting away with that next time - if there ever is a next time......

I hope this little exercise is of interest to SMLE fans. Part 1 was moved over to The Restorer's Corner, where I suspect this will also go, but I wanted to post it on the Enfield forum to give more people a chance to see it should they wish to.

I'm sorry about the quality of the photo's, but the backgrounds are generally a reflection of the chaotic state of my garage workshop. If only mine was as tidy as TBones!!

The next phase will be doing the woodwork. I'll keep you posted...!

Sure aren't afraid of serious work there, Roger. Good work, I'm somewhat jealous here!

Cheers Lou. Serious restoration work? I s'pose so, but the thought of having an SMLE/Aldis/H&H sniper there, complete in my gun rack, is what keeps me going. Now, gotta start looking at the woodwork..........!

    Best.
