I came across at my lgs a 1903, serial numbered to 1918 with 1-18 SA Barrel. I have lusted for a WW1 1903 for awhile. While the stock, trigger guard floorplate and bolt were wrong I figured in time I could get the parts and restore it. However much to my dismay, the receiver where there should have been the "Springfield Armory, Model 1903" was ground off. Only the "U.S" and serial number were left. I believe the receiver had the original rust blue and had the original 1-18 dated barrel on it. Someone had hand stamped "03" in the middle of the receiver. Has anyone ran across a similar situation? Could it have been someone who brought back a war souvenir and was afraid of getting in trouble ground the markings off? I really want a WW1 dated 03 but I think it best to pass on this since the receiver info was ground off. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on this rifle, Thanks in advance.Information
