Gewehr 98 firing pin protrusion

Hi Guys and Gals,

I exercised my C&R the other day and picked up a 1917 Amberg Gewehr 98, all matching numbers. Upon disassembly I found the firing pin tip was broken off. This morning I decided to re-tip it and left it long. I'm wondering what the correct pin protrusion should be.

About 55-65/1000", if I recall correctly (just checked - yes, see Kuhnhausen P.57). Applying the old engineer's motto : you can file it off, but it's really difficult to file it back on again, I would leave about 70 in the raw cut state, and then take great care with a diamond lap to file a smooth rounded tip, whereby a couple of thou' will be lost. Then try it out - take a good look at the primer indent under an eyeglass. Any signs of penetration? If so, remove no more than 5/1000" and try again. As most old service rifles will be a couple of thou' looser in head clearance than a new one, do not try to go any shorter.

The truncated firing pin;



Proto firing pin tip installed... The sacrificial drill shank is inserted 0.375" into the firing pin body and silver soldered in place



After shaping and setting pin protrusion;



Soon I'll be able to assemble the rifle and test out my first firing pin rebuild.
