"L" Stanp on Stock??

While cleaning the stock I found a relatively large "L" on the top of the stock just behind the rear sights. The L has serifs. Anyone know the significance of this stamp?

Hey Al,

Have a theory that Augusta Arsenal put marks like that on M1917 and '03 stocks. Does your stock have an "AA" followed by another letter on the left in front of the wrist? If it does, then Augusta probably put that "L" on your stock.

My M1917 has a large "F" just behind the top tang and Augusta marks just front of the left wrist. It's a Winchester stock on a Remington rifle, Augusta rework. Have an '03 with "AAG" on the left of the stock and a letter or number behind the top tang.

Can't find any AA stamp on the stock. So far it's just the 3 G M - K stamp on the left side and the L on the top. I've got the stock fairly well cleaned so I don't expect to find anything else.

The marks may have washed out or been sanded over in time or subsequent rebuilds.
One trick you could try is taking a digital photo and using some photoshop type software and adjust the levels and see if any hidden marks come out.

If you dont have any appropriate software you could email me a shot of the left wrist/receiver area of the stock and I will see if I can get anything to come out. It may not work but its worth a shot and sometimes it works.
