    Was my Type 99 rebarreled?

I recently picked up a Type 99, Toyo Kogyo, series 31 rifle. Serial number XX258. All the numbers matched on the bolt, safety knob, dust cover and firing pin. It also has the AA wings on the rear sight and has the monpod. The mum is present but lightly scratched. As I was cleaning the rifle I noticed that the barrel was stamped with the number 860. Also there is no number on the front barrel band. So my question is, was this rifle rebarreled my the Japaneseicon military or was it done at a later dare? The rifle is in excellent condition other than having the stock sanded and cut (duffle bag) so for $180 I couldn't say no. Any infornation you guys can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

Normally the bolt group was numbered to the receiver and all other numbered parts, including stock and hand guard, were marked with an assembly number which is what the ''860'' most probably is. See if it's also on the receiver bottom between the recoil lug and mag well.

I agree. Typically, Japaneseicon rifles did not have a barrel number matched to the serial number. That number you cite is not supposed to match the serial number. The Japanese did not normally rebuild or rebarrel rifles. They would move them to school or other non-critical roles.

Thanks guys for the information. I don't think I will be taking it apart again anytime soon. If I do I will look for that number.

Sometimes that number that you see stamped, IIRC can be seen on the barrel channel of the stock. But not on the barrel itself.
