OT - Need Computer Help.

My expertise with computers is limited to "point and click." I know very little of the terminology. In trying to resolve two problems I am having trouble figuring out exactly what it is that I need to do.

Briefly... When I go to a website, etc., a message appears saying:
"A script on this page has been stopped due to low memory."

My wife has informed me of the following that we are receiving what is called a "1814 error" associated with Ad-Aware 2007.

I would very much appreciate any help that anyone might be willing to offer so that these issues might be resolved. Sincerely. BruceV.

You need to list your operating system and browser: Vista, XP, Firefox, Internet Explorer?

Hardware: RAM?

If you are not using some kind of Virus Protector and/or Firewall, you need to. It's just a sign of the times, like having insurance. You many not have a real virus but just some little thing conflicting.

There are a myriad of free stuff out there that are very good. They give you the free stuff then try to get you to upgrade to a pay deal. I just ignore the selling pitch.

The ones I use are located at PC Tools - Free Download Anti Spyware, Antivirus, Firewall, Internet Security, Registry, Disk Repair software. I use the PCtools Free Antivirus and the PCtools free Threatfire. On mine I don't have the antivirus running in the background but run it about once a month or when pc seems to slow down. The Threatfire I keep running in the background, it automatically updates itself daily to new threats. Setting these up for others, I have them running in the background.

I am sure that others can come up with their own protection and most are good. I prefer the free stuff.

One more thing. When something starts "bugging" you, you can open the System Restore function and have your pc revert back a few days to when it was not acting up. I use this frequently too.

Your results may vary.

The computer is a HP Pavilion bought in 6/30/07. It has Vista. It has Internet Explorer, which we have not used. It has Foxfire when we used with very good success. And it has wonderful me... commander of the magic clicker by which I (hopefully) have not damaged or destroyed our computer.

Don't add any software to your system, you were running fine before? Are you up-to-date on your Vista Service Packs (SP2). Run Internet Explorer for a few days and see if it persists. Firefox has some issues with their V3.5 if you are using it.

First, click START (the round Windows system, lower left)
On the next screen/right side click CONTROL PANEL
Then SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
Then SYSTEM

That will show you how much RAM you have. If less than 2 Gig, get thee to a computer store and have them add whatever the computer will take. 3-4 Gig is nice.

But before even that, go to Symantec and get their Norton Anti-Virus program (if you don't have it already.)

If remember right, HP ships with Norton installed free for 90 days. If you have allowed it to expire, either download the next version or go buy it at the store. I advise the store if you are are already infected so as not to expose credit card info on a possibly-infected computer.

Next, go to

and download/intstall SPYWARE DOCTOR. It will clean up all the adware that even Norton will miss. I recommend it highly.

You're looking at a couple hours clean up, but you probably will be fine.

One thing about Norton and this is important, before you install a new version you must first uninstall the old version completely or you will have conflicts.
To completely uninstall you have to go to the symantics homepage and go to downloads where after much searching you will find the tool to uninstall the version of Norton you have which is probably the 2007 version. Good Luck. This is one of the main reasons I've decided to try AVG instead of Norton.

I use Avast,heck of a good program,just make sure you down load the Home Version for Vista,long as you stay with "Home version" it's 100 % free.(just enter avast in google and it will take you right to it).

It is fixed!!! Back in January someone (who will remain unidentified) installed Ad-Aware 2007. Apparently there was a problem with the version installed. It would "run in the back ground and use a lot of 'resources.'" In addition, when I tried to uninstall it, the uninstall failed. However, LAVASOFT forums had a number of helpful entries one of which detailed how to get the problematic Ad-Aware 2007 off the machine.

It is amazing... here I sit with a computer that is now working correctly! I want to express my sincere thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. Sincerely. BruceV.
