My No.4 MK.I* after bedding

Hello all,

in a former thread i wrote about the restoring of my LE. Tonight i was at the range and made the rest of the work. I`ve done a acrylic bedding of the system 2 month ago and today i added a barrel bedding in the reinforced part of the forestock. For that i used different layers of cork. I shot some rounds at 100 metres, let the rifle cool down and changed the cork layer as long till i get the right result. Now i think that`s OK. I added two pics, the first shows the result of the penultimate cork layer and the second shows you the best one. The black target patch has a 19mm diameter. And at this point i want to thank you Peter again for your great help and information.

Alan is absolutely right. It's amazing what kind of results you can get by working the bedding of these old girls. The next time I hear someone whine that they can't get their Enfield to shoot very accurately at 100 yards, I'll link them to this thread ...

i am very happy with my old girl ( Born in 1943 ). Yes it is a little work for some hours, the costs where low €12.80 for the acrylic paste, and €6.75 for the wine ( wich tasted good, Italian made Chianti :-))but the result is great!

I am sorry I missed the earlier thread.
what barrel is in that tackholer.
where abouts did the packing end up and did you free float the muzzle end and bedd it under the point where the handguards meet?
The late and great Jim Sweet of Australia once stated that if you get a No1 mk3 to group at an inch at 100 yds ,you have an exceptionally good grouper. You certainly have that!!

thanks for the congrats. The barrel is the original 2-groove barrel from Savage. I added the acrylic paste around the system without removing any wood. As i purchased the rifle the system was loose for the reason of wood shrinking. I only filled up the shrinked wood in the area that is shown in the pic. The barrel channel is complete free, there is no bedding at the front sling swivel. I bedded the barrel in the reinforced front end of the forestock with an piece of cork that lays u-shaped under the barrel. You have to measure it in that way that the barrel dont touch the upper handguard. I added a pic and the drawing of the cork piece. You have to excuse my poor drawing skills. Hope that helps you a bit, if not please ask again. My load is a 180grs.S&B FMJBT with 37.7grs N140, CCI BR-2 primers and a COL from 77.8 mm.

Congrats, Gunner! Further infos on the bedding would be a great help. I´m still trying to decide whether my No 5 in .308 or the .303 is more accurate. Both are bedded with a free floating barrel.Think it´ll be the .303. And I still can´t work out why BOTH seem to be more accurate at 300 metres!(Suppose it might just be me). I´m in Berlin, so we might even meet up for a shoot sometime. So, if you´re ever up here .... don´t forget to bring an LE along!
