    Talking Just a WAG...

...but for a target rear sight? Maybe for a rare National Match target carbine.

    Rare WW1 model

Thats the magazine cut-off notch for the extremely rare WW1 Top Secret (Shhhhhh!) Carbine used at the Somme in 1918. (or not)

Anyway, I have never seen such a notch. Looks like it was made that way too. Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Good morning Charlie, I have been watching that one. My curiosity has me wondering about that cut out also. What do you think about the RMC stamping?.....Frank

    Hi frank,
The stamp appears to be real, but I've never seen the bottom lines extend that far to the left.
The stock looks to have been split pretty bad from the oiler slot. I wonder if it got as far as under the buttplate?
I just can't figure out that notch.
Maybe Al is right....something top secret...LMAO

I believe that stock was made for the early (1939) prototype of the left-handed bolt action carbine.

    Nice job.

    Bolt Action Carbine

Let me tell you about a "REAL" bolt action M1icon Carbine.

Here at Ft Polk at our little museum, I think it's known as an "artifact storage facilty" or something like that, there was one. I say "was" because it has been a long time since I have visited it. (Might give me something to do tomorrow)
Anyway, they had displayed an M1 carbine that Charlie Cong had taken and converted, literally, to a bolt action by brazing, welding, soldering, take your pick a "bolt" like you get at Lowes or NAPA to the right bolt lug. Crafty little devils.

I know, I'm off track here. Just got reminded of that Bolt action M1 Carbine by kikokat's post. I will now shut up.

    Be well all. Al

    John,
If your serious about it being a possible 1939 proto type......Wouldn't it have been a I cut stock?
