    Newark, N. J.

    Dear Sir:

    I am directed by the Chief of Ordnance to reply to your letter of October 7, 1934, file OO 474.1/6380 wherein you request information concerning the identification of Springfield Rifle, Caliber .30, M1903, No. 524756.

    You are advised that there is no record in this office of the rifle referred to above. The serial number, however, is being circulated to the various corps areas and major depots and the results of this inquiry will be communicated to you at a later date.

    Newark, N. J.

    Dear Sir:

    Reference is made to letter from this office dated October 12, 1934, file OO 474.1/6382 in regard to Springfield Rifle, Caliber .30, M 1903, No. 524756.

    The records of the War Department do not indicate that this rifle was legally disposed of by the Government. Therefore, in the absence of information concerning proper ownership, this rifle is subject to confiscation wherever it may be found. If you desire to turn this rifle in, it should be shipped by express collect to the Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory, Springfield, Mass.

    One 1903 gone in a split second - no reward. I note that the writer did not specify where he obtained the rifle. Wise move. Depression era, needed money, took a chance, lost postage and shipping charges.
