Question on my Rem. 03A3 - damaged finish

I purchased a nice 03A3 a while back and then decided to get a padded leather shoulder guard to 'ease my pain'

I just took it off after about a month or two of its being in place and found that the leather had removed some of the finish. I'm just a little irritated

Have I messed it up good, or can it be restored and how?

    Here are two photos.

    Thanks for any help

Someone at work today mentioned that I should try boiled linseed oilicon.

Would that be any better than a little gun oil?
