1945 jungle carbine....

jungle carbine? can anyone help,i have just aquired a jungle carbine but the stock is not what usual jungle carbines have,it does not have the steel plate with sling attatchment or the recess where it should,it appears to be a regular stock,with a brass butt plate.the gun is of the 1945 vintage,does anyone know if they ever came like this,thanks in anticipation for your help.

No, they did not come like that. There are many copies of the No5 out there---some built on No4 action bodies some built on the No1.
Assuming yours is not a No1, if the backsight support looks like the first photo below, it's been built out of a No4 by some importer.
If it looks like photo number two, it's a No5 with the wrong butt on it.

How much are No.5 Mk.1s going for these days? I saw one at a local gun show (woodwork intact and not too dented, most of the original finish missing from the barrel, matching bolt) for $350. I was going to go back and look at it again, but I got a raging headache.

If you are really lucky, it could be a Aussie made Lithgow No.6 Mk1. These were Lithgows version of the No.5, but rather than being based on a No.4 action they were based on an Aussie No.III*. All the research that I have read indicates that the No.6 mk1 was built in very limited numbers with some of the production having No.3 butts and the balance having a version of the No.5 butts. To be a No.6 it should have a Lithgow receiver. If it does....Happy days - Paul

The differences between a No4 and a No5 - note the 'lightening' cuts around the action (particularly between the rear sight pivot and the charger bridge) and the 'scalloped' barrel as it enters the action.

Not a lot of No6's about then !!!!!

Some shooters don't care for the small pad on the No5 and change to a No4 butt stock.
