Oil for cleaning

I've been using CLP, the otis and breakfree kinds, to punch the bore of my M1 the last few times I've shot it. I'm curious to find out what kind of cleaner was used originally to punch the bore. I've got the little grease pots to grease the main points with lubriplate or plastilube, so is there a specific kind of oil to use or should I just stick with CLP, brass bore brush and patches?

I had a container of the original bore solvent for M1 rifles and used it until I determined it wasn't anything special. Maybe it had died of old age, I don't know. I just use a good grade of rifle oil and always have. Most of the time I avoided the breakfree that had to be shaken before use. We had it on issue in the army and found that it separated after application as well. That left part to burn off and the other half turned stickey. I use the same brass brushes as issued with the M1 because I have a lot of them. I just don't use a rod through the muzzle. I use a pull through instead. I don't think there's a magic treatment for your rifle... Jim

I've been using Hoppes number 9 on the bore, Break Free for lube (sparingly) everywhere else.
Its worked fine for me since 1980 now.

Just be aware that "CLP" does not remove copper fouling or the salts from corrosive primers. Not sure what effect it has on powder fouling. browningautorifle - WW2 vintage GI bore cleaner IS SPECIAL. It was formulated to dissolve the salts left by corrosive primers.

I was guessing the one I had was dead of old age(original) or I just wasn't using it for it's intended purpose.
