    Help! ID my butt.

I am trying to come up with an origin for an older style, Mk.III butt. The only markings that I can find (other than a painted rack number) are faint opposing broad arrows and a 'U'. Any ideas as to what type of wood this is?

    buttstock

second variation as found on Mark 1* and Mark 111 rifles from approx 1906 to 1915. Some first variations were modified to the second variation.

deja-vu. Yeah, a little early for the '17 LSA that it is on, but much better than the sanded Bubbastein that was on her when I got her.
What I am realy looking for is wood type and nation of origin, but if anybody knows what the 'U' represents...

It's walnut and the opposing arrows are the "sold out of service" mark. Don't know about the "U". Could be a South African thing but that's just a guess.
