    AK-47 bayonet

I recently got this bayonet, a bring back from Iraq. What is this silvery "parkerizing" that is on Eastern Bloc bayonets ? It seems to be quite effective if not very subdued. No marks except a 4 digit serial number.

It's a satin chrome and very hard too. Tried to get it off once and it took ages in the blasting cabinet. In fact after a couple of minutes of further blasting, it looked so good that I thought I'd leave it as it was but after a few more days in the atmosphere, the 'un-chromed' areas started to show again so in it went until it all came off.........................

Terry: FYI: This is an Ex-East Germanicon FIRST patern AK47 bayonet. Distinctive because of the BLACK coloured grip scales & brown leather belt loop. Sovieticon ones had Plum coloured grips & a green webbing loop.
Interesting that a 'Kraut' version found it's way to 'Sunny Climes'! Still, I guess weapon 'Retailers' would ship anything to anywhere to make up numbers! To them it's just another AK accessory!
I just took possesion of an SOVIET RPG7, and THAT had originated from Africa!.......(1970's era)

    Thanks

Thank you both for the info. I picked out of a pile of 9 bayonets. There were two more of this pattern, with web loops, and 6 (I know now), AKM bayonets. All slightly different. Guy got a collections just by picking out from a pile over there. Also got some currency from Iraq, and the Bosnia (he was there also) area. Currently in Afganistan. Wish I had taken a photo of them.
