    1903a3 Rear sight question

I just picked up my 03a3 barreled action from my ffl this afternoon. All I need for a complete rifle will be a trigger guard and two screws. I have a question regarding the audible clicks on the rear sight: there are none. I can feel the faintest click while turning the windage knob. Very faint, almost not there. The windage knob has no resistance to it and turns much easier than I would have expected. Today was the first time I have handled this type of rifle so it makes me uneasy. Every other us military rifle I have handled have had the exact opposite as far as ease of movement and audible clicks on windage. What is it and what do I do to remedy this????? Thanks

Windage spring missing or the windage assm needs tightened. Please refer to your TM9-1270. (I think)

The detent ball and spring found under the windage knob is missing , broke , or just gummed up. Might try soaking it in brake or carb cleaner to de-gunk it , otherwise you'll have to take it apart and look. Beware as they are very small , IIRC , and easy to loose.

The most common cause for an '03-A3 rear sight lacking windage detents is bent rear sight base ears. The windage knob has a thin, flat, dimpled spring behind it. The dimple in the spring provides the detents. If the ears are bent inward slightly, it relieves the pressure against the spring and causes loss of detents. The simple solution is to bend the ears back out to the vertical position.

    Hope this helps.

Aw crud. I was thinking of another rear sight. J.B. 's correct , there is a shim washer with two "ears" with dimples to engauge the four detents in the rear of the windage screw. Bent ears would pull them apart. Sorry for the bad intell. You lose things when you get older , I think I miss my mind the most.
