    UPS outrageous shipping costs

I just shipped a C&R 1911A1 to a fellow in Alabama today (a C&R holder). Followed all the rules, UPS Next Day Air. With insurance for $700 (It was a mixmaster), total was $81.44. That's just damn HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!

Everything I've heard and read, from collectors on up to postal inspectors has led me to be confident that FFL to FFL (including 03 C&R) can send via USPS Priority Mail.

Best read I've found on the subject:
    Letter to USPS Inspector General

The next day air is where they get you, but if you think they stuck it to you try this on for size.............. During cotton season I work maintainance for a local gin keeping the field equiptment running. The module builders have their own hydraulic system ran by a tractor mounted pto driven pump. When one takes a dump and can't be rebuilt I order a new one and have it sent next day air. The cost of the pump is $450, UPS charges another $250-$300 to overnite it to me depending on where it ships from. Now thats highway robbery.

If it were me , I'd have a spare in stock to sell them for 550 and then order a replacement slow boat for next time .

I normally do but with 80+ machines in operation all at the same time scattered over 6-7 counties more often than not demand exceeds supply. This usually happens about the time a major weather event is forecast.

There is no law in effect that says a handgun must be shipped by air. My local ups guys don't make me use the air option, as I understand it- it's nothing more than ups's own rule that they can skirt around

You are correct that it is not federal law that U.S.iconmust ship handguns by next day air, but it is a UPS regulation. I have a feeling that if the package was lost, and that was the reason the UPS regulation for Next Day Air was instituted, you would be out of luck when it was determined the handgun had not been sent by NDA.

Handguns, as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921,will be accepted for transportation only via UPS Next Day Air Services, specifically, UPS Next Day Air® Early A.M.®, UPS Next Day Air®, and UPS Next Day Air Saver®. (Note: UPS Express CriticalSM Service is not available for firearms).

    Different UPS issues:

    1. I had been shipping UPS since 1967 (working for a company) and started my own account in 1979. For 32 years the company has been great. By early 2012 I cancelled by UPS account. The billing has been a disaster, getting billed for shipments that were not mine. I even got a credit for a past entire week's shipment to my account, which was not due. After asking for statements about the false billings and a not due credit, I got nothing. After several months of talking to various people who would not explain anything, I stopped shipping. The final conversation showed me I made one mistake of payment and they made several. I sent the amount due and closed it up. Weeks later I got a recorded phone call telling me I owned $50+ dollars and to pay it or my pick ups will be stopped. My account was closed and I had no pick ups. Later that week I received an invoice showing I still owned $17.00. I email the accounts receivable department and told them if they did not straighten everything out, they will hear from my lawyer. That was 2 months ago and I have not heard anymore.

    2. A package arrived to one of my customers, cut into, the item removed, and the package re-tapped. The driver admitted it probably occurred within the UPS system. On line I filled out a form to get the item investigated at the Arizona location and a few days later MY UPS driver had documents trying to pick up the item from me. I explained their error and he had to continue attempted pick ups 2 more times. I then got billed for those incomplete pick ups. I then called in the same information, explained the problem and sure enough the same thing happened the next day. My driver arrived to pick up the item in Arizona. I ended up getting stuck for the $100.00 loss.

UPS had great drivers, but the personnel they have hired for internal control is screwed up. I will not ship UPS ever again.

Be sure to read the fine print on the FedEx air bill before using them to ship any collectible valued in excess of $500...as FedEx limits what they will pay should they lose or damage a collectible to $500...even if you purchase thousands of $$ insurance from them. You will have to sue FedEx to get anymore than $500 in the event of a loss for any collectible item. That's why I won't EVER use FedEx.

I shipped a Rolex watch using Fred-Ex-pensive, it cost me over $100.00 and that was express, not next day! Their collectable insurance was a max coverage of $1000.00 which I more than used. I ended up purchasing an additional insurance from my homeowners. USPS will basically insure for whatever you list but good luck ever collecting on a claim. There is so much red tape on all carriers that you almost want to just say screw it!

I have not found a USPS office that will ship a handgun. Our little UPS retail store will not ship any firearms period! I have to go to the shipping hub in Mojave but their hours suck! They are only open from 1530 to 1800 for drop off shipping.
