A little humour but interesting.

Charlie likes these old pics. I took these two from a book, and they depict two GIs at a dance in New Zealand in 1942/early 43. I'm not sure if they were trying to get into the dance, trying to stop uninvited people going to the dance, or were just observing the activities as they were on duty ! They appear to be enjoying themselves anyway and so they should ! Of interest to me is the weapon they had with them at the time, is that a "trench gun", can anyone identify it ?. Looks like a BAR with no magazine or bipod. Seems like I read that some Marines liked them without the bipod.....Frank

Looks very much like a BAR; the foregrip and barrel give it away.

It is a BAR. Charging handle on left side of receiver. Guess they are "lucky" that the weapon is unloaded (mag is missing).

Thanks folks, I agree, a BAR. Here's one more. Marines in my hometown, Wellington, N.Z, having a break on a route march in June 42. They probably got sent off to somewhere nasty like Guadalcanal a few weeks later. Last old pic as Jim might get angry with me, not strictly Carbine related ! Mike.

Look as hard as you want, I don't believe you will find a carbine on that street. Only about 400-500 made by June of 42. And I doubt they would have been shipped half way around the world.

But pictures show history. They have interest to most, if not all, of us.

Looks like a "WWI" type BAR. (Versus the WWII type with the bipod, different fore end, front sight, and selector choices.)

Mke PM'd me this last night, I guess that was this morning his time. Carbines made it there in 1943 shown by this group on R&R in New Zealand. I wonder if it was outside the "Milk Bar".
