    New 98/29 Persian Mauser

I've got a thing for 98/29 Persian Mausers. They have one of the cooler crests and they are very well made. Whenever the subject of "the best Mauser" comes up, the BRNO 98/29 Persian is usually somewhere on the list.

I got lucky at an auction over the weekend and scored several rifles, including this Persian. The pictures are terrible and the auction description wasn't much better. I bid accordingly.

It isn't easy to tell exactly what condition this Mauser is in...most of the other rifles are caked in cosmo and this one looks like it may have its share too. Better pics and description when it arrives.

I picked up my rifles and have started looking them over carefully. I think I made out OK on this Persian. It is a little gunked up with cosmolineicon, but that may have protected it. The bluing is in good shape, no corrosion anywhere that I can find and the wood, although dented a bit, looks solid. It is all matching

    The bore is pristine.

It has a few cartouches I can't identify

Excellent bore and crown! Should be an A1 shooter.

How about taking a look at the bolt face? If that also looks almost new, and the butt plate has not been scarred by square-bashing, then you have what I call an "armory mint" rifle - i.e. basically unused, but banged around in the racks, transport and storage for decades. They are the best value for money for shooters, as the dings put off collectors, but have absolutely no effect on performance.

Patrick...I took a look at the bolt face and it looks pretty good. The butt palte is pretty well mint also.

I'll post some pictures of both.

I made a quick stop at the range this morning and fired a few rounds through the new Persian. My eyes have trouble with the "inverted triangle" Mauser sights, and the target wasn't the best, but here are 5 rounds of Prvi 8x57 "match" ammo @ 100 yards.

I think I could do a bit better with reloads.

Paul, the sight graduations are in Farsi and I'll take a pic before I put the rifle back in the safe.

Very good for a first target. The Mauser "pitched roof in a V" sight picture is tough. If you are what one might term "vintage" or "veteran" you need shooting glasses to get the best out of those rifles. And that squared target is for scopes, not open sights. Try again with a good old 8" round black and 6 o'clock hold, it may well be easier and produce a better group.

Thanks, Patrick. I like to shoot at a black circle on a white background, but had no such targets today. Now that I know where it is hitting, I can make up a few circular targets.

Also, I've had good luck with 45.0 grs of IMR 4064 with a 200 gr Nosler .323 bullet...might give that a try.

Paul...here is your pic of the rear sight.

Looks like a shooter for the CMPicon Vintage Rifle Matches!

I'll try and get to the range this week and shoot some reloads at a better target. I believe the results will be better.
