Seems they have over run a position in the hedgerows as the MG 42 has had the barrel removed and all the go gear, guess they may be having a spot of trouble with snipers

combat patrol advanced three miles north of Lucca (furthermost point occupied by American troops) to contact an enemy machine gun nest. Here a bazooka-man cuts loose at the target some 300 yards distant." September 7, 1944. Edwards. 111-SC-194328

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

Right directly in front of the camera. Just the bottom right of the pic.

The chap at the rear with the finger ear plugs sure chose a spot that was not the best idea as well as leaving the muzzle of his weapon in the dirt and a chap with 30 cal MG tri pod in the back ground.
Just a question the 50's were they regarded as to heavy for infantry assault weapon or did the squads just use the 30's and the BMG 50's stay on half tracks/transport/tanks and fixed points just a question chaps.

The .50s are a heavy machine gun. Not meant for platoon advance and contact. The .30s were for that. 50s would be dismounted for a specific purpose.
