Need Help on Matlby N4 Mk1 Date and FTR date

Picked up a nice No4. MK1. Numbers match except bolt (no # just an "F") and Magazine. Store sold it as a 1941 but tough to tell from the markings. It appears to have been FTR'd twice, First by Maltby with FMR with a T over the top of the M, then Fazakerly with (FTR) 4 mark. All of that is very faint. Looks like the serial number would date the rifle around 43 or 44 but the date has been overstamped on the last digits it looks like a 1. Everything is in nice condition #2 bolt head looks like never shot. A few odd things like a Savage rear sling swivel and an F on the micrometer sight.

Just another example of a good, hard working No4 rifle FTR';d in whenever. When a rifle was FTR'd, they didn't go through a huge box of parts to find a special manufacturer. It came in as crap and went out with another 80% full service life ahead of it

You could get tyhe bolt fitted properly by someone who KNOWS what he's doing, have it numbered and that's JUST what we'd have done AND what they'd have done at Fazakerley

Thanks Peter, Any thoughts about the markings? Would they bugger about re=stamping the year? That seems a mess. Not that it matters but it's nice to get your thoughts. Would I be right in assuming the Faz FTR could be 54? I need to strip it down completely so I may find some marks on the bolt but would they stamp them or use the same arthritic guy with a worn out engraving tool?

Mmmmmm. We didn't go a bundle on how good looking things were, taking the Sten as a good example - we just made things that were serviceable. We used to engrave or stamp kit depending what we had. It looks like 49 (1949) to me

Fazakerley were notorious for their feint serial numbers. Caused us all sorts of hassle and paperwork problems. But a bit of judicious sleight-of-hand with the book usually 'cured' things!!!!!
