    dangerous 1903a3 remanufactured Remington

Was at the Allentown, Pa. gun show this afternoon and found a Remington a3 with a clean 2 groove barrel. It has a scant stock and was reparked, so I bought it just for a shooter rifle. Once I got home i pulled the wood off and noticed the first 3/16" of the receiver ring was slightly tapered indicating this was once a drill rifle. The worst part is when I checked the head space it was way oversize like just closing with a .012 shim behind a nogo gauge which i believe is .002 more then a field gauge. I will contact this FFL dealer as I did paperwork on the purchase and see what his response is on Monday. I guess there is a lot of Saturday night specials out in circulation from people who think they are skilled enough to put a rifle together. The magazine cutoff area look very good and no sign of reworking where it would have also been welded. I would imagine that if a class 07 manufacture had restored it they would have to put their ID somewhere on the metal.

Upon further examination I found that the bolt locking lug rear area was machined approx. .013 from the nominal bolt height of .387-.388 And is now .375 When they put a new short chambered barrel on it they didn't have a 30-06 reamer so they cheated by removing metal from the bolt area to acquire head space. In this case if the bolt was not altered the chamber would have probably spaced out ok.
