    WW11 rebuild

I have A SA 1903 1360525 with a SA 6-42 with a prewar C stock no firing proof P no inspectors stamp the bolt and other parts are early WW11. it looks like it was rebuilt and put in storage grease is still has grease in the bolt, mag well and barrel I sent pic to JB he suggested that maybe it was a navy rebuild because of the lack of inspector stamps what I can not figure out is there is no hatcher hole if this was a early WW11 rebuild would they not have drilled a hatcher hole in the receiver?

I know that the Hatcher hole was added to low-number 1903 receivers in Marine hands when they were rebuilt...not sure if that was done to high-number receivers as well.

The long service life of the '03 leaves room for all kinds of reasons for things being as they are found now. That rifle may have been a match rifle that went to war and was re-barreled. Stocks come and go, no way to tell who or when it was installed. My CMPicon, Greek return has a 1931 made receiver, full pistol grip 03A3 stock, and an AV 12-18 barrel. Typical pined floor plate, and black finish. I would guess that spare barrels found in U.S. depots were sent to Greece for support use, and dates and markings mean nothing in real use. A barrel is a barrel. Remember over 5000 1952 dated new M1icon rifle barrels were obtained by the CMP from Greece when the rifles were returned.
