He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
I'll bet lots of this stuff was simply out of fuel.

Good bet that.
North Africa.
Reminds me of a story a Russianfriend told me after a few bourbons (he hated vodka). I bemoaned that our South Vietnamese allies lost a lot of our stuff and even sold some on the black market. In his heavy Russian accent, he said, "Well at least yours sold them, ours GAVE them away."
He then proceeded to tell a story of the 2nd Israeli war when there was great tank destruction on both sides. We denuded NATO to resupply the Israelis, the Russians loaded a ship with brand new tanks right off the assembly line and rushed them to Syria. My friend was there when the Syrians mounted up and roared off the meet the enemy. The Russian "adwisors" waited nervously all night for word of the battle but heard nothing. The next day the Syrian tank battalion returned at noon ON FOOT. They had gotten lost in the desert, drove until they ran out of fuel, followed their tracks and walked home. The Russians loaded up some fuel trucks and raced back to find the tanks... but they were gone. The Israelis had found them, refueled them and drove them off![]()
