    No4mk1 Serial Number Placement

Anyone ever see the rifle serial # stamped in the top of the butt right behind the receiver in the spot you would normally find a number in a “T”. This rifle is certainly not a T but has the rifle serial placed thus. Just wondering. Rifle in question is a 1943 Maltby.

Might have been done in a unit armoury where rifles were racked, so as to make serial number id a bit easier. I have seen 4T's with both the scope & the rifle serial number stamped where just the scope number usually is. Also one or two where the rifle number was stamped immediately behind the pistol grip by where the 'S51' is stamped.

I can't say definitively that it was done by Armourers since it seems to be something I've only ever noticed on ROF Maltby production service rifles. I have two or three here that are "as new" and it's done to all of them. I'm thinking it was done at the factory, ROF(M) but certainly could be wrong. Like Roger, I've also seen it on L42A1 sniper rifles along with the scope numbers but that's a different kettle of fish.
