1895 Swedish m/94 carbine -- made by Mauser Oberndorf

Oops -- should have called it an M-94/14 (since it has the bayonet lug).

I just picked up this rifle today from a friend -- it was part of a collection he inherited from his dad. It's an M/94 Swede carbine, made by Mauser. Serial number 185, with all numbers matching. Bore is nice and bright and it has most of its blueing. Receiver blueing looks great . . . missing a bit on barrel bands and buttplate, etc. I paid $540 for it. Did I do OK?

It has a small "JV" on the right side of the receiver just above the wood; I just read that is the inspector mark on the library posting (great article).

The very end of the barrel, maybe 1/4 in. has no rifling, with the crown set inside the barrel. I guess that's the "extension" for import (just read about it on the library post about M/94s). Nothing on it looks butchered or sporterized.

I can't find an importer mark, but it looks like something might have been scuffed off right below the bayonet lug. Could be normal wear, but there's lettering there I cannot read.

Beautiful rifle! I’d say 540 is the perfect price—very good deal for you, and your friend got a decent wad of cash.

The barrel extension is peculiar. That’s a weird thing I never knew about these guns.

Thanks! I will try to get some good pics of the numbers and such posted. It is serial number 185; all the visible small parts are numbered 85 with the sight numbered 185. I have not taken off the stock yet to see how it is marked.

Very nice early production carbine. You could probably get twice what you paid for it if you decide to sell, but I'd recommend hanging on to that one.

Thanks! I am pretty excited. I've had a couple of 96's before, but I've always wanted a carbine. I am going to take it out to the range this weekend. Added a few more detail pics. And ugh . . . nothing like macro photos to show the grime. I still have some cleaning to do.

The more photos you show, the more I like it! Thanks for sharing! I think the "K" on the stock disk indicates it was issued to a Calvary unit....................cool.

Yes, I was just looking through the Dutchman's site . . . K for Kavalleri.

If I am reading the site correctly, I have a mix of Gustaf and Mauser parts on this gun. The crowns on the bolt handle, sight assembly, and buttplate are definitely flat on the bottom (Gustaf). Most others look to be Mauser. What looks like an "OB" stamp on the stock is probably a CB for Karlsborg Tygstation and indicates a major maintenance performed. Always fun figuring this stuff out.

that barrel extension is peculiar as crap. never seen mauser contract carbines with it before, and ive seen photos of same extensionless rifles with bayonets mounted

Yeah, apparently the ATF mandated that Interarms add that extension back in the 1960s because the barrel is 17.7 inches rather than 18. That ruling was later overturned.I guess it is a sign of how long ago this one was imported.

You have a very nice Swedish Carbine. Do no harm in your 'clean-up'. It is in great & presentable shape! You got it for a bargain price.

You are correct, the barrel extension was put on by the importer to comply with our Federal Law at the time. No 'Import Marks' required back then.

Mauser marked receivers are few and far between!
