I knew a former Marine who fought on Iwo. When he had a several beers in him, he would talk about the battle. I remember one quote from him. He said, "that fighting the battle for Iwo was like fighting at the very gates of Hell." Mostly from the black sand and sulfur smell.
From what I have read I think Hell is much worse

I should think that Peleliu, Tarawa and the battle for New Georgia would rank among some of the worst also encountered by the USMC.
I have only just graze read the book on New Georgia pretty intense what I have gleaned from it.
I am at present reading this 1st Ed H/C "Backs To The Wall" (An AIF soldiers experiences in France WWI) a no holds barred account of what that war was really like in that apocalyptic event.
