This pic surfaced on FB and I was looking at it identifying the various weapons held by the diggers, the usual No 1 MkIII's, Bren, and then I saw the compensator.
Without looking much further I thought Thompson but looked harder as the weapon is blocked partially from view then you get to see the whole deal.
What it appears to be is an Owen gun with a dirty great banana mag that nearly touches the compensator.

I only have the book on the owen that covers certain issues at the time with its development and not the models and accruements.
Anyone in the know can they enlighten us as to the fact that may was produced for the owen or its a forward workshops non standard thing.

I think it is a late Japanese Type 100 smg

Anything's possible seeing as there is a sword there and I gather that may be a Japanese bayonet not a '07, but if you look closer you'll see that the weapon in question has a definite camo pattern on it and I have seen pics of owen's that have been camo'ed up by the troops. Is it a long stretch that the mag and the japs were using 9mm as well that it was a going thing to be able to use in the owen.

I had a good look at the few pics in my book one shows a long compensator the other a smaller one but not detailed enough on the short one so I could count the flutes, however the mag release is prominent in my pic and this one and looks to be a 100% match for an owen.
Found a pic of a type 100 don't look anything like the mag on top of the SMG in the pic.

It is an Owen granted, but the focus of this thread about the picture is on the banana mag it has as all the ones I have seen pics of have it as a straight mag.

I looked at my book "the World's Submachine Guns" by Nelson & Lockhoven. The only very curved magazine that I found was
from the Finnish Suomi Model 1926 SMG in 7,65 cal. The Japanese were known to use 7,65mm SMG's (Swiss & German) but
really doubt they would have a Suomi model 1926 smg ?
