Another Temptation sporterized ENFIELD NO.4 MK1

I was looking at this really nice looking F.A. Loomis Double Barrel, Damascus shotgun; the old shotgun bug has bitten me, and this Loomis, being an English shotgun, has my attention. Anyhow, I felt something looking at me and I turned to find this Sporterized ENFIELD NO.4 MK1 staring at me, his dog-tag said $300.00.

Well... I ignored him.. Who needs another project gun, sorry you are lonely. So I'm now and waiting for the seller to give me a price on the shotgun and that Enfield is poking at my brain. I really hate when this happens. "Resistance is futile," but I am trying.

That rifle would be a perfectly good hunting rifle. Looks to be in decent condition. However:
It would be a poor candidate for restoration. The barrel is shortened. The receiver is drilled and tapped for Weaver TO-1 scope base.
US$300 is close to C$375. Here in Ontario, that would be on the high side for a sported No. 4..

It appears to be a 1948 FTR so if the barrel is a pristine five groove and the bolt matches properly, the rifle is a perfectly good candidate for a better sporterization.

Get rid of that 'orrible stamped trigger guard first.

Either use the existing holes or weld them up or put in some filler grub screws.

If you weld them, and are therefore going to refinish, take the opportunity to work over the whole receiver and guard with fine files and take off the sharp edges etc. they should have taken off in the first place.

Looks like a good honest hunting rifle. Get a 5 shot magazine or cut that one to seat it flush with the trigger guard. Or add a scope too.
