Type 38 no mum different crest?

A friend picked up a type 38 rifle that has no mum/number and a different crest that I am unfamiliar with ( I don’t collect Japanese rifles). It appears to be a Nagoya symbol with an H. I have read that some early training rifles and rifles made in China or maybe for export do not have mums, just wondering if anyone is familiar with this crest? Regards

This is a known training rifle crest, tied to an unknown maker. More than likely, under the supervision of Nagoya. Not much is know but should have common training rifle features. Have any more pictures of it?

Thanks for the info. Not yet. He was going to try and clean the bore today to see if it was rifled. I asked for more pictures of complete rifle as well as the bolt, etc and a few other pictures. He is headed out of town tomorrow so hopefully he will take a few tonight. Regards

Typically these are smooth bore, blank firing trainers. If the rifling is crap, maybe wooden bullets, never live ammo.

Some trainers were service rifles, retired for training use and most of these were used (and still can be) with live ammo. These will always be marked the same as service rifles except a canceled mum and zeros added left of the serial number.
