A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. carbine, Serial No 37. Probably lowest serial number known to exist as the research shows the serial number range started at No40 and anything below may be Trial Versions.

I don't recognise some of the markings on the left hand reinforce above the proof marks and below the double arrowheads. Wot are those?

I believe they are commercial nitro proof done June 1971 (671)
Someone please put me right if i am wrong!

here are a few images of my NZ icon

carbine. It is much later down the line, Serial No 1292. The receiver appears to be a reused one which leads me to wonder if Enfield were struggling to find enough to complete the contract. I see that there is another carbine currently advertised for sale with a higher serial number than mine that also has a double dated receiver. Another point of note is that most of the NZ carbines around seem to be DP marked.Attachment 59269 Attachment 59270
