I will try to answer the question.
And no, I am not going to spend all afternoon tearing down carbines to find out.
When Larry wrote his book, he stated what he knew at the time. Winchester type B sears are stamped on top. I think was the quote. I have not found my books yet. Sorry.
Does that rule out they may also be stamped on the left side? It would imply so.
But that is what was known (he could prove) by Larry at the time. If he had three stamped on the side and a hundred stamped on top is that enough to also state "and on the left side." What if he only had one sear stamped on the left side? What would then happen if one(some) are found stamped on the right side? "Some Winchester type 2 sears are stamped on top behind the hole. Some others are stamped on the left side or maybe the right side too." Which came first? Did a man stamp them on the side and a woman, with smaller fingers, stamp them on top?
Did White change their style of W to match Winchester and stamp sears on the left side?
Maybe, who knows. As far as I am concerned, Winchester type 2 sears can be stamped on the left side also.
Remember, Larry did a better job of research than JC. But for the numberof carbines JC got his information from, I think he did a good job. His sample was just not large enough and he made some conclusions from his small sample that has proven not right as he would have liked. Anyone read Larry's first Carbine book? It is referenced in the CC NL. They did a real roast of the book. The "War Baby" we know was Larry's second book on carbines.

CC Data sheets do a super job trying to keep the form simple and still idenify carbines. Just think if, for every part you had to also locate each stamp on each of the four or six sides of every part. And don't forget to tell how the stamp is orientated, up, down, left or right, It is hard enough just trying to keep up with periods and serfs. (in poor light with poor eyes)

Bottom line, no one knows. We are using the best information we have and then guessing. All of us but BQ. He must have a time machine.
