The irony in this bayonet thread is that if you loook at thread 18, photo 5, you'll see just how far the catch protrudes from the side of the bayonet. Now look at the same plan view of an UN-modified L1A1 or L1A2 bayonet and you'll see the stupidity of the L1A1-A2 bayonet modification to L1A3-A4 spec. It was done '..... to prevent the loss of bayonets due to the excessive protrudence of the catch when the bayonet is fixed to the rifle'. Strange that the even more protruding catch of the No5 bayonet on the No5 rifle and L2A3 SMG didn't cause concern. And that it didn't cause concern for AustralianL1A1 bayonets either!
And while I'm here, the catch on the L85 bayonet protrudes a fair bit too! Such is life I suppose
