    Soldier with Broken Rifle

Since the Caption Read "this issue rifle was not an M1icon Garand" then what was it, looks very similar.

A U.S. soldier looks at a shattered M1903 rifle which was shot from the hands of a friend after the Attu landing in the Aleutian campaign. His comrade died from his wounds.

Note that soldiers there may not have been supplied with the latest weapons, since this issue rifle was not an M1 Garand.
