First of all hello to everyone. I'm longtime shooter (bullseye, highpower, IPSC, PPC, F-class) but very new to Garands.
Long story but I acquired a SA over 25 years ago from a friend and it's been in the back of the safe ever since. Recently I got it out and started doing research. During research I found IHC made garands and they were all made in Evansville, my home town. So the search started. I found one on auction w/o the correct stock but everything else seems to be IHC but possibly not for the correct serial range. Bolt, op rod & trig group are late. Everything else that's verifiable appears to be correct. It's possibly this could have been a rejected rifle and sat in the corner of the rebuild area for a long time since its documented IH had problems. ... or someone attempted to make it "correct" without the proper knowledge.
Here's my dilemma. It does not appear to me to be a welded receiver but from the posts I've read and the books I've seen if it's an "F" receiver its marked "IHC F-6528291". Mine is D6528291-F with the F at the end and no other marks. Does anyone else' have this marking? Serial is 4544896 which should be early 54. Barrel is LMR 7 53 w/ punch.
I believe it may have been a honor guard gun as the stock was really grimy, buttplate is 80% worn smooth and barrel is toast (10+++). Mechanically its in great shape.
I've got a bazillion questions but figured I'd start with this one
Thanks in advance
