“Aided by ‘Duke’, a Great Dane, two Marines stand guard over two chests of Japanese government payroll captured in the Guadalcanal action. The sentries are Corporal Frank W. Sutter of Brooklyn, NY (left), and Private James E. Maige of Tallahassee, Florida.”

The Great Dane, Duke, was the beloved dog of Major General Clayton B. Vogel, who commanded I Marine Amphibious Corps during World War II.
