I can easily believe that as the only CDN property M1icon rifles we had were during our change over from .303 to 7.62 in about 1956/1958 and in CFE (Germanyicon). We had them on the airfields for local defense and had a shortage of ammo for the new rifles. The M1 was a stop gap and we of course could have purchased the clipped ammo from US supply. We made .30 cal ammo but it would have been simpler to just purchase ammo with the rifles. The rifles are circulating among collectors with an electro pencil acceptance mark. Most are like new.

The ones I was referring to are not surplus but fakes as they didn't hold ammo correctly.
