Were K98k sniper rifles shipped from the factory in cases?

Mel Brooks wrote On page 66 of his book, All About Me!,

One day I was out on patrol with my platoon and we found a case of German Mauser rifles near an old railroad siding. They were beautifuly sharpshooting rifles with bolt action.

So were scoped K98ks shipped from the factory to the schools in cases?
