The 5,6x39mm cartridge was developed in the USSR as a hunting/competition cartridge, by necking down the standard Soviet 7,62x39 cartridge. Also adopted for use in Finland and imported by SAKO as the 220 Russian.

the 5,6x39 or 220 Russian fires a 54gr SP bullet @ 2993 fps. Russian loadings fire a 43 gr bullet @ 3379 fps.

it is also the parent cartridge for the 22 PPC, 6mm PPC and 6,5 Grendel
