"5.4mm" German training rifle.
I'm looking at a German military training rifle that looks very similar to a German K98
rifle. It is marked "5.4MM".
Is this the European nomenclature for .22lr and/or can I shoot current .22 lr cartridges in it?
Thanks

Hi Steve,
they had different calibers the older Wehrsportgewehr is chambered in 4mm M20 and since they have the D.S.M. 34 ( Deutsches Sport Modell 34) it is chambered in .22LfB ( .22 Lang für Büchsen ) wich is the same like .22LR. Is it a "Gustloff Werke" rifle ? They are good rifles. The bore diameter is normaly 5.34mm up to 5.4mm but it is also possible that it is a bit smaller.

My Gustloff K.K.W. is marked " kal .22 lang fur Buchsen" on the left side of the barrel and "5.4" on the right, with the proofs. The ammo is marked "Zielmunition Kal 5.6 / lang fur Buchsen". It is all .22 LR. The rifle is also "SA der NSDAP" marked on the stock.

Hi Steve,
nice looking rifle. They had 7 makers:
BSW, Anschütz, Gustav Genschow &Co, Mauser / Oberndorf, Walther, Haenel and the Gustloff Werke.
Tell us how it shoots. Sometimes it brings funny reactions if you see some guys waiting for the big bang of an 8x57mm and they hear the small noise of the .22LR!
Have fun

Hi Steve,
Nice to hear from you! Here is everything OK! Yes the Nagants are common over here. But the Finnish
Nagants are rare and they have the call to be better than the Russians. Two guys at our gun club shoot this ones one the 1891/30 and the other one has an original 1891/30 sniper and both rifles are good shooters. Congrats you have a nice collection! Hope your all right too!

Kkw
Calfed's rifle looks most like a kkw (kleinkaliber wehrsportgewehr). However, the picture doesn't disclose enough detail to tell the whole story. The kkw did not have the stock bolt that the pictured rifle has. BTW, Tom in NJ's GW-KKW is very early and shows the crown-B and -U proof marks that were retired in 1940. Below one of each of the four kkw's (BSW, Mauser, Walther & Gustloff).

So is the consensus that a 5.4 mm is likely to accept some .22 rimfire?
