SA barrel date question
Got a brief look at a SA Garand
, serial #17861xx, which I believe puts it around July 1943. I'm curious about the barrel, which I believe (I'm 71, and didn't have my glasses) was an SA barrel dated 47. Is that possible? How long after WWII did SA make barrels?
Thanks in advance for any help.
John

Can you take the handguard off and see the drawing # ?
If it is a -35 or higher it is a 1945 or later barrel
Also shortly after WWII SA stopped putting the 1,2,or 3 in front of the SA and date. WWII from late 1942 should read like the: 2-S-A-4-44 sometimes having the dashes and sometimes not. Post WWII would be S-A-1-47 until you got the 65 prefix in 1953 I believe. There was a thread about this a few days ago on one of the forums. One of the well respected collectors said the -35 heat lot lasted a couple years after WWII because of the amount of barrel steel that SA had on hand at the end of the war.

Thanks gentlemen. I no longer have access to the rifle, so can't check additional info. I do know it had the SA and 47 on the side of the barrel. Just wasn't sure how long after the war SA made barrels.
Appreciate your help.

Kiko,
SA made standard M1
.30 cal barrels every year through post war until 9-56. There was a pause until barrel production began again in late 1961 both for replacements and NM barrels. Their last barrels are dated to 3 and 4-67.
