Garand NM rear sight problem
First off the rifle we're talking about is a match rifle I built some 3 years ago.
Front and rear sight are NM, Kreiger barrel and the fixings.
Well now I was testing some different loads and while doing so I discovered
that the rear sight is bottomed out for shooting at 100yds, can't believe I
never noticed that. The load I've been shooting the last 3 years is fine, I hold half moon sight picture on the target and have been shooting expert
scores the last two years.
Now with another load I need to come down a few clicks but can't. The
aperature has been modified and does not hit in the receiver well. Whats
stopping it is the aperature hood hits in the sight base cut out, won't
let it go down any more. Would like to have a few clicks of downward adjustment at 100 yds if possible.
Anyone ever run into this problem with a NM sight group ?
Thought about taking the base to a machinist and milling the radius down
a little more, would like to avoid doing that if possible.
Any ideas & thoughts welcome > > > thanks

When I have run into this with a Garand, NM or other wise I solder steel shim as required to the front sight blade, dress it up and color it flat black. If you use the sight distance, radius formula you can calculate exactly how much shim to install on the front blade.

Check your base.
I suspect your elevation adjustment problem is that the rear sight base is not a NM2/2A base. Take a look at the picture and you will see the difference between a standard base and a NM base. The dimension of the aperture recession on the NM base should be .500" diameter to accomodate the aperture hood. The windage knob thread for NM bases should be 5/16-64" NS while the standard base thread is 5/16-32" NS. If your base is not .500" at the aperture recession then that is the reason it will not adjust down further, the hood is preventing it from doing so.

Take the recess in the base down a little with a round file.

Holy Brain Fart Batman ! ! !
Thanks for the posts/replys fellas. I found the problem, I didn't have the actual NM .62 front sight on the rifle. I had one I modified to a thickness
of .40 and it's a full 1/16th shorter than the NM sight post.
