I was just looking at that. It just shows the lack of focus from the rear echelon. Typical, I think we all witnessed something similar in the military. It's like, look over here...and we should actually be looking over there !

From the looks of the guys miling around on the beach in the background there appears to be little action or maybe they are beach obsticals and not troops

What type of unit were they? I see multiple carbines, but only 2 Garands and a M1903 at the far left. Most likely support troops of some kind because of weapons.

Or a mortar platoon/squad. Most men in a mortar unit wouldn't have been lugging around Garands/M1903s.
