Saginaw ?
I just purchased a 30 Cal carbine and am trying to find out just what it is. I can"t read the name under the rear sight, and do not know how to remove it... The serial # is 18333xx and it has an Underwood barrel. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

p.s. I am new to carbines

The trick is to slide a piece of aluminum foil under the rea sight over the name. Then use a piece of dental floss to press down on the foil. Rubbing the floss back and forth will trace the engraved stamp onto the foil. Pull it out and read what's there. Hey, it maybe a child's art's and craft, but it works!

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? Gun apears to be about 80% to me, but I am new to carbines.

That's a Saginaw S'G' or Irwin Pedersen serial number.
I would lean S'G' over IP.
QHMC was in the 1.55- 1.66 and 1.87 to 1.93 in the one million sn ranges
S'G'/IP was 1.76 to 1.87

The foil is the quickest and most accurate method of reading it... I'm just saying there's an easy answer.

That's not even close to QHMC's serial number blocks. The QHMC block are as follows:
1550000 - 1662519
1875040 - 1937519
4432100 - 4532099
4632100 - 4879525

TR I like your idea. I was just correcting the QHMC SN tread above your first post. There was also a rock-ola block in there between the high and low on the range given.

The foil really works but is not my idea... Picked it up from one of the OLD FARTS in the forums a while back.... I have used on a couple of Saginaws to verify if I had S.G. or S'G'. The foils does an amazing job of showing detail.
Listen to the old farts like BQ - we all can learn a few things....
Just my two cents worth...
