I just noticed that there is a "1917" in between R-S and GMS on the sling. You can see it in the photo too. I hate being blind.

Those things are like a puppy or kitten following you home from school. I almost had one follow me home this weekend, looked to be in similar condition but all visible marks were "E".

Don't know for sure but is the "AOL" American Legion? Not sure, just a guess. Sure looks like a keeper to me.

I believe the "AO" indicates that the rifle was inspected at the Anniston Ordnance Depot. The "L" would be the initial of the inspector. The Anniston (Alabama) depot was established immediately prior to WWII. I believe it was renamed the Anniston Army Depot sometime in the early 1960s.
